11 Irresistible Reasons for Buying an Instant Pot

We bought our Instant Pot in 2016. It’s now 2020, and still going strong. It came out of the box, claimed it’s space on the kitchen bench and has never been put away. Sometimes a day or two will pass without it being used, but then there’ll be occasions when I’ll use it three times. I’d say on average we use it once a day.

It’s an essential tool for healthy living. If you don’t already own an Instant Pot, then I fully encourage you to manifest one as soon as you can. Here are 11 reasons why you won’t regret it.

Why You Should Buy an Instant Pot

1. Saves Time. The Instant Pot cooks things fast, and I’m not kidding. Richly flavoured Stews need to simmer on the stove for a good few hours, but with the Instant Pot they’re ready in 30 minutes. That said, the “Slow Cook” function is always an option. and I use it often. Vegetables are steamed to perfection in 2 minutes. Soups take just 5 or 10 minutes on high pressure, Tapioca Puddings can be made in 2. Bone Broth, which would normally take between 12 and 24 hours, is on the table in just 5 hours, including the time needed for the pressure to build up and the time it takes for the pressure to fall.

2. Saves Money. The Instant Pot works through the build up of  internal pressure. Once the pressure point is reached, it requires very little energy to maintain it at that level. Instead of burning gas or consuming electricity at a long, steady rate as happens with conventional cooking, the Instant Pot reaches temperature quickly and then holds it. There’s a lot less ticking over on the gas and electricity meters, especially when you’re talking about Bone Broth.

3. No Stress. Once the lid of the Instant Pot is closed, there’s nothing to think about and nothing to do. There’s no need to stir so that things don’t stick to the bottom. No need to watch whether steam is escaping. No need to continually check that it’s all going okay. Close the lid. Forget about it. Relax. Even when the timer sounds, you don’t need to rush – the Instant Pot will slowly decrease pressure, and keep your meal warm.

4. No Mess. This factor is amazing, and it’s got something to do with the lid. Once it’s on, there are no splatters and bubbles. It’s hard to explain, because even saucepans have lids, I know. But the Instant Pot is in a league of it’s own when it comes to kitchen tidyness. Nothing escapes, everything is perfectly contained.

5. Fun. The Instant Pot is fun, especially if you’re into kitchen experiments. It brings out your Inner Chemist, and has you theorising about how it all works. It also brings out your Inner Steam Train Driver – opening the valve to let off steam with the Quick Release Method is a moment of sheer kitchen appliance excitement.

6. Nutritional Density. All foods cooked in the Instant Pot retain more nutrition than when cooked in any other way. With regards to vegetables, for example, the reduced cooking time means there’s less opportunity for nutrients to leek out into the cooking water. When cooking with bones, the pressure sucks the nutrients out, so the resulting liquids become a power pack of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients.

7. Flavour. Yes, the flavour of foods cooked in the Instant Pot is exceptional. If you steam vegetables for 2 minutes and then “quick release”, the flavour isn’t lost through overcooking. In the case of soups, stews and broth, the hard-to-access flavours contained in the bones, that normally take hours to develop, are drawn out through the pressure.

8. Multifunctional. The Instant Pot Duo has 12 functions: Soup, Meat/Stew, Bean/Chili, Poultry, Rice, Multigrain, Porridge, Steam, Slow Cook, Yoghurt, Sautè and Manual. So many that I haven’t got around to trying them all, but those that we have used we’re impressed with. We have basmati rice about once a month (because I forget it’s there), and in the Instant Pot it’s perfect every time. The stews are brilliant, soups are effortless, and the Sautè function is infinitely useful. I haven’t tried making yoghut yet, but I know people who love that function. Tapioca pudding is fantastic in the IP! Just place a heat-proof bowl onto the wire rack which is included, add all your ingredients, and pop on the lid. No stirring required

9. Quiet. There are a few domestic sounds which we love. Those first gurglings of the dishwasher as it prepares to wash. The coffee percolator as our espresso bubbles forth. And that slow hiss followed by a sharp click – and then silence – which indicates that the Instant Pot has sealed the valve and is starting to build up pressure. It’s lovely. Peaceful. Every now and again it might release a sigh of steam, but the predominant disponsition is tranquility.

10. Prevents Humidity. This is a big one. If you want to be healthy then Bone Broth is a must. But 12 -15 hours on the stovetop will turn your kitchen into a tropical zone. Your windows will fog up and dampness will build up in the corners. Buy yourself an Instant Pot before mushrooms start growing in strange places. The IP keeps all the moisure in. If you use Natural Release, not a drop of humidity escapes. With the Quick Release option, just toss a folded teatowel over the valve and the steam is contained.

11. Bone Broth. Yes, I know I’ve mentioned it in almost every other paragraph, but the Bone Broth factor deserves a point of it’s own. Bone Broth in about 5 hours from start to finish, need I say more? Oh, alright then. The Bone Broth made in the Instant Pot is better than Bone Broth made on the stovetop. Many of the bones come out pin-marked and chalky, which means all of the precious minerals and gelatin have leached out into the broth itself. So good for you. Our broth intake has increased since the IP came into our lives, and our digestive tracts are thanking us for it. Thank you, Instant Pot.
